Almost every child I have ever met absolutely loves story times and read-a-louds. They make early phonics fun! Hearing all about silly happenings and listening to a little one giggle is not only good for the soul but it helps create a learning environment they never even notice. How could you not love such a winning combination? This is why the early phonics fun Silly Sentences has brought into our household is so wonderful!

Emerging Grammar Skills

Our littlest of littles enjoys pointing to the letters on each page and looking at the unique illustrations while our middle child “reads” to her sister by practicing her letter sounds. The oldest comes up with words and together, they all craft their own silly sentences. There is a game on the last page helping to instill these ideas and encouraging imaginative thinking. As a mom, it is heart-warming to see all three of our children enjoying early phonics fun as a team. This is a perfect opportunity for multi-level homeschooling which I love!

Getting Inspired

Rock-N-Learn’s Silly Sentences has had a very positive influence on our oldest child’s reading and writing skills. Suddenly, the child who dreaded writing practice and story telling wants to create her own books! She’s coming up with her own silly sentences and tying them back together while beginning to really understand the concept of paragraphs.

There is even talk of letting her create her own printed book!

Early Phonics Fun

  • The Great Phonics Race – Teachers can label different areas of the room as bases for the phonics sounds they are currently working on or even create bases outside. Then, read the corresponding pages to your students and have them race to the base! Parents can do this similarly at home or spice things up by laying letter cards on the floor and having the children hop to each phonics sound as the sentence is read.
  • Silly Sentence Scramble – Cut out or use sight word cards and allow the students to rearrange them creating silly sentences of their own! For writing practice, have them write their sentences down, or take it one step farther by creating illustrations.
  • Treasure Hunt – Disguised as a treasure hunt, uKloo is a super fun literacy game designed to help build reading confidence while introducing research skills. Designed for kids ages pre-k to 8-years-old, this game is perfect for raising readers!
