A little over two years ago, my friend Mommy the Zookeeper made a comment about her littles’ sign language progress. I do not recall the exact conversation but it did come up again over the years and I began to really wonder what was so amazing about the teaching methods she was so fond of. We used sign language with our second child as a way to cope with her loss of verbal communication. Around 9 months old she could easily say about 20 words and then one day it just stopped. Nothing. Not even “Mama” was part of our every day. The signs helped us break through her unwillingness to verbalize her wishes or frustrations. Even with this being our main form of communication though, she never excelled at picking up more than the necessary words and even our oldest wasn’t thrilled with learning new signs. It kind of fell out of practice as we grew as a family. Now, it is back, in full force, and with lots of excitement! What sparked this change? Signing Time!

Signing Time! Christmas

Recently, I decided to give the program Mommy the Zookeeper had raved about a  and the kids are loving it! Signing Time! was kind enough to send over a complimentary copy of their Christmas Collection for us to review and I am very excited to announce we get to give away one too!

Signing Time! Christmas
This collection is a 3-disc set which includes a Christmas DVD, a Sing & Sign Christmas DVD, and a Songs CD. What I loved most about this setup is the variety of options for each disc. On Signing Time Christmas (DVD), we got to celebrate Christmas with Rachel, Alex, Leah, and all of their friends as they taught us over 45 ASL signs! We were able to choose between watching the whole disc, the whole disc excluding the nativity segment and Glory! The Bible Nativity, the whole disc excluding the Santa segment, pick our own scenes to watch, or go to just the songs portion. On Sing & Sign Christmas (DVD), there were just as many choices! We could play the whole disc, just the sing & sign instructions, just the sing & sign songs, all songs excluding the nativity songs, only the nativity songs, or pick between the different scenes we wanted to watch. Sing & Sign Christmas was, by far, the kids’ favorite disc from the collection! Included in the songs are:

  • We Wish You a Merry Christmas
  • Jingle Bells
  • Away in a Manger
  • Silent Night
  • The First Noel
  • Signs of Christmas
  • Christmas is on It’s Way
  • Give it Away
  • The Spirit of Christmas
  • Follow the Star

The third disc included is Signing Time Christmas Songs (CD) which includes ALL of the songs from both Signing Time Christmas and Sing & Sign Christmas. This disc is great for on the go or even for schools and churches! It even includes sing-along versions! I cannot wait to get this uploaded to our iTunes collection for playing in the truck on our move home for the holidays. It’s so perfect!

I admit, I was a bit skeptical at first. How could Baby Signing Time and Signing Time possibly be different from using the children’s sign language books or watching videos online? But a convert I have become! Our whole family has enjoyed these lessons and will be moving on to their regular DVDs soon. The kids have fun with it, beg to watch it, and actually learn from it. That right there has been a complete game changer in our ASL education; the kids love it!

Want to try it out yourself for free? Head over to enter our raffle! It is only live for 3 days so that the winner can get their copy in time to learn some of these fun songs before Christmas. Think of how excited the kids will be impressing Grandma and Grandpa with their own mini performance!

  1. We have used Signing Time since my oldest was a toddler, 9 years ago! My youngest has some speech delays at 16 mos, but we know she knows what she wants to say so Signing Time has helped her and us communicate without the tantrums!
