Start up a book club.

All book lovers share one common passion: reading. Why not celebrate by creating your very own group of people to indulge with you in that new favorite you’ve been dying to read? Book Club love, anyone?

Create a blind date with a book.

This idea is amazing for littles. Simply wrap up some new books they are sure to love and let them open them as a type of National Book Lovers Day present!

Little Free Library

Establish a little free library.

Started in 2009 as a tribute to Todd Bol’s mother, Little Free Library has swept the nation and is spreading quickly to other countries. Based on the same principle as a book swap, participants are asked to give books when they can and are encouraged to borrow books on a regular basis. These adorable little libraries are constructed to resemble bird houses and are bringing communities together in historic ways.

Visit a local library.

Supporting the local libraries is still an important part of preserving reading resources for our future generations. In an age where electronic books (ebooks) are ever more present and available, we feel it is important to pass along a love for the written word in it’s (close to) original format. Can we all agree there is just something about the smell of a paper copy book?! Most libraries still have children’s story times including crafts and silly songs making them a great opportunity to introduce your little one to other book lovers.

Harry Potter Illustrated

Enjoy a book-themed marathon.

Do you have a favorite book series? This would be a great time to re-read some of your favorites or even have a book and movie marathon! I for one would love to re-read all of the Harry Potter books before having a Harry Potter movie weekend. Talk about nerdy-heart heaven! Did you know there is an illustrated edition? They make the perfect gift for mini-bibliophiles!

Host a National Book Lovers Day party.

Along similar lines as the marathon, this would be a wonderful time to throw a party where everyone comes as their favorite characters. You could make it book-themed in general or implement a single book/series such as having a Lord of the Rings theme. Please, say hello to all Gandalfs in attendance for me.

Join a reading challenge.

There are so many great reading challenges going on at this time of year with everyone enjoying summer or gearing up for back to school. One of our family favorites is the 100 Books in August Challenge hosted by Mommy the Zookeeper!

Show your books some love.

National Book Lovers Day is a wonderful excuse opportunity to spice up your bookcase or even introduce a whole new one to your home! You could try painting the whole bookcase a new color, paint just the back wall of it, rearrange how you collect/display your books, or add some new décor. The possibilities here are great!

National Book Lovers Day - Make A Book!

Write your own book.

With the ability to create, print, and sell a variety of books, why not use Blurb to write your own book in celebration of National Book Lovers Day? Over on their website you can choose between photo books, trade books, magazines, and ebooks. From there the only limits are your imagination. They even have their own bookstore where you can search new releases for some additional inspiration.

Create custom quote tees or tanks.

We all have our favorite genres but if we are lucky we can narrow it down to a few really good books or series. Why not sport a quote you love on your own custom tee or tank? The Typical Mom has a great tutorial for customizing almost anything using freezer paper!

How are you celebrating National Book Lovers Day? We would love to hear all about your fun times over on Facebook!
